Milestones
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort opened in 2005, and since then has enjoyed a short but remarkable history. Hong Kong Disneyland has contributed to boost Hong Kong’s tourism industry and supported the local community. We look forward to making more contributions in the future.
Early Development (Before 2005)
  • Nov 1999

    The Hong Kong Government announces the city will be the site of Disney's first theme park in China, to be created through a joint venture with The Walt Disney Company.
  • Jan 2003

    Construction work on the resort begins.
  • Oct 21, 2004

    Hong Kong Disneyland Resort names Angela To as its first ambassador.
  • Aug 2005

    The new MTR to Hong Kong Disneyland Resort opens. Inspiration Lake Recreation Centre officially opens to the public.

    Asia's exclusive Toy Story Land officially launches. Guests can experience the feeling of being shrunk to the size of a toy when they enter Andy’s backyard to play with their favorite Toy Story friends.

    Hong Kong Disneyland Resort receives Green Management Award (Corporation) and Green Purchaswi$e Award from the Green Council.

    Disney ImagiNations Hong Kong Design Competition's first winning team of students travels to the headquarters of Walt Disney Imagineering in California to showcase their talents and exchange ideas while representing Hong Kong.

    The world exclusive Grizzly Gulch officially opens. The unique and innovative Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars takes Guests on a runaway adventure which features unexpected forward launches, backward dashes and rapid turns and crisscrosses the entire themed area.

    The one-of-a-kind themed area Mystic Point officially opens. The ‘Mystic Magneto-Electric Carriage’ in Mystic Manor is by far the most sophisticated ride system in Disney’s history. Guests can immerse themselves in a unique adventure of theatrical wonders that combines traditional storytelling with innovative technology and special effects. Mystic Manor has been honored with the Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement – Attraction from the Themed Entertainment Association in 2013.

    Hong Kong Disneyland together with the Committee on Home-School Co-operation hosts the “We Did It!” Award Scheme. The scheme aims to award students who dream and reach for the sky with their unlimited imagination and potential.

    HKDL collaborates with Foodlink to collect surplus food to distribute to those in need, including elderly homes, underprivileged families and children. Every year, we can support thousands of families.
  • Oct 1, 2014

    The brand-new “Disney Paint the Night”, a first-ever fully LED parade created by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts officially debuts. The Parade has been honored with two awards, namely the Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement - Parade Spectacular from the Themed Entertainment Association, as well as the Brass Ring Award for Best Multimedia Spectacular from the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions in 2015.

    Hong Kong Disneyland’s 10th anniversary celebrations kick-start with the all-new "Mickey and the Wondrous Book" live musical show. The Park includes singers from Hong Kong, China and the Philippines to create different version of the 10th anniversary theme song, “Happily Ever After”.

    Disney Parks’ first Marvel-themed ride, Iron Man Experience officially opens. For the first time, the Park integrates strong Hong Kong elements into a park attraction by using Hong Kong and its skyline for the fly-through ride.

    Hong Kong Disneyland Resort opens its third hotel, Disney Explorers Lodge. With its exotic theme and immersive storytelling, the 750-room Disney Explorers Lodge offers the ultimate vacation experience only Disney can deliver, and an ideal getaway destination for all guests.

    Hong Kong Disneyland wins Travel Weekly Asia 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards - Best Attraction.

    Hong Kong Disneyland Resort provides a venue for a series of large-scale outdoor concerts for the first time. Each concert can accommodate an audience of around 20,000 people. Hong Kong Disneyland offers a unique total entertainment and resort experience.

    Cookie Ann, Duffy the Disney Bear's newest friend, makes her global debut at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
  • Aug 2018

    Hong Kong Disneyland Resort starts to create Hong Kong’s single largest solar energy system by installing over 4,500 rooftop solar panels on a number of attractions and backstage buildings. The total power generation is expected to reach approximately 1.86 million kWh (equivalent to the power generated by an estimated 564 three-person households for one year). The Park hopes to encourage and promote the development of renewable energy, as well as reduce carbon emissions and ensure a cleaner future community for Hong Kong.

    Hong Kong Children's Hospital launches the "Dress Well" project with Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. The partnership created clothing for child patients that embrace practicality and fun elements, encouraging them with Disney’s magic and power.

    Hong Kong Disneyland Resort launches a new scheme fostering family volunteerism. The scheme, Family Plus, encourages families to do voluntary work together, and gives park tickets in appreciation of their volunteer work.

    The brand-new Marvel-themed attraction Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle! officially opens. This high-tech, high-energy attraction lets guests team up with the iconic duo of Ant-Man and The Wasp, as they shrink down to the size of an ant in order to battle the evil artificial intelligence Arnim Zola and his Swarmbot army.
