Environment
OUR COMMITMENT
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort (HKDL) embraced an environmental approach from the project's design stage, and our dedication to environmental protection extends to our daily operations. We firmly believe that demonstrating respect for the environment is an integral aspect of conducting our business at the resort.
WASTE MINIMIZATION

Food Waste Recycling

We adopt source separation and food waste recycling at our Resort. Pre and post-consumer food waste collected in the resort is sent to the government’s anaerobic digestion facility (O.Park 1) in Siu Ho Wan where food waste is converted into energy.

Yard Waste Recycling

The natural growth and regular trimming of trees, along with damages caused during typhoon seasons, unavoidably result in the generation of a significant volume of yard waste. In order to minimize waste disposal at landfills, HKDL has implemented its own on-site wood chippers to handle yard waste and facilitate in-house recycling. Through this process, plant materials are transformed into organic mulches that are then used to cover the soil in both onstage and back-of-house planting areas.
Additionally, HKDL collects and categorizes yard waste like grass clippings, leaves, shrubs, and twigs to prevent unnecessary landfill disposal.

Recycling Efforts

We prioritize extensive recycling efforts at the Resort and continually explore ways to enhance our recycling capabilities. Currently, we recycle a wide range of materials, including common items like food waste, cardboard, various plastics, paper, aluminum, and glass. Additionally, we also recycle non-conventional materials such as yard waste from landscape maintenance.

Minimize Single-Use Plastic

In recognition of the environmental impacts associated with single-use plastics, HKDL has implemented measures to reduce their usage at the source. Within our hotels, we provide refillable containers for bathroom amenities, eliminating the need for single-use plastic packaging. Additionally, we have replaced plastic packaging for slippers and bathrobes with more sustainable alternatives. Furthermore, to-go containers and cutlery have been substituted with environmentally friendly materials.
ENERGY CONSERVATION

Renewable Energy

HKDL has installed more than 7,500 rooftop solar panels at 47 locations within the resort, establishing the largest solar panel site in Hong Kong. With an annual power generation exceeding 3.3 million kWh, this sustainable energy source can provide electricity for over 1,000 three-person households. By undertaking this project, we aim to inspire and advance the adoption of renewable energy, while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions and creating a cleaner and greener future for the Hong Kong community.

Improve Energy Efficiencies

HKDL’s energy conservation strategies involve incorporating environmentally friendly solutions in the design of utilities systems as well as maintaining ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency in existing operations. Examples include adopting district cooling air-conditioning systems which are more energy efficient than conventional water-cooled and air-cooled air-conditioning systems; energy saving lamps in guest and back-of house areas; motion sensors in hotel guestrooms to switch off room air-conditioning when the room is empty; variable frequency drives (VFDs) in water pumps and chillers to lower energy consumption; light and motion sensors in park and hotel to switch off lights when the area is empty; and the constant monitoring and fine-tuning of energy usage throughout our Energy Management System.

Expand LED Lights Application

HKDL is dedicated to expanding the use of LED lights throughout the entire resort. To date, over 75% of the lighting system has been successfully transitioned from conventional lighting to energy-efficient LED lights. This significant switch has resulted in a substantial reduction in electricity consumption, contributing to our ongoing efforts in sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

Install EV Chargers

In line with our commitment to supporting the popularization of electric vehicles, HKDL has installed over 100 EV chargers at our carparks for the convenience of our valued guests and dedicated cast members.
WATER CONSERVATION

Inspiration Lake

Inspiration Lake in the HKDL Resort is not just a scenic recreation area. Rainwater is directed from the surrounding hills into Inspiration Lake where the water is stored temporarily before being fed to an irrigation system that supplies the entire resort area. Water conservation is also achieved by use of a weather-driven computerized irrigation system. How much to irrigate and how often to irrigate is carefully controlled by a computerized system that calculates the optimum water usage based on the soil type, plant type, and weather information such as humidity, temperature and rainfall collected from an on-site weather station. Collectively, the use of the computerized irrigation system and rainwater as an irrigation source is estimated to have saved a substantial amount of potable water.

Water Savings

As part of our ongoing water conservation efforts, we have replaced shower heads in hotels and back-of-house areas with water-saving alternatives, reducing water consumption by 20%. Rainwater is collected and stored in a cooling tower, supporting our centralized water-cooled air-conditioning system for efficient cooling. Additionally, the recycled water from the cooling tower bleed is utilized for toilet flushing.

Water conservation was a primary consideration during the design of the Castle of Magical Dreams. To ensure responsible water management, we have constructed a new moat water storage tank. This tank serves as a temporary reservoir, specifically designed to hold the water drained from the moat surrounding the castle during maintenance periods.
GREEN INITIATIVES

Earth Month

In April every year, HKDL celebrates Earth Month with our Guests and Cast Members. Messages on environmental protection is delivered to our Guests and Cast Members in a fun way.

Green Outdoor Event

HKDL has partnered with NGOs to initiate a series of green initiatives for outdoor events. For instance, we have implemented the provision of water dispensers and reusable cups at the event venues during the 10K Weekend, encouraging runners to bring their own bottles. Furthermore, we have established paper cup recycling stations along the running route, allowing participants to contribute to recycling efforts. Additionally, an on-site recycling program has been introduced, enabling runners to recycle plastic bottles, plastic bags, banana peels, paper, and other recyclable items.
